La Befana

Yesterday we celebrated La Befana Day.  Not too many people are familiar with the day, but it's an Italian tradition.

The legend of La Befana is that she is an old lady (sometimes depicted as a "witch") who hears of the birth of Jesus and is looking for him to bring him presents.  La Befana never finds the baby Jesus, so instead she brings presents to all the good Italian children.  La Befana always comes on January 6th (also known as three kings days) and leaves Little Bear a small present.

Tommy is not such a fan of La Befana day.  He thinks Little Bear doesn't need the present which is true, but I love celebrating my Italian traditions.  I try to keep the gift small.  Last year we did a set of books.  This year, La Befana brought the Ready, Set, School kit (pictured below).

Little Bear seemed really excited with this gift and practiced writing his letters on the dry erase board for almost 40 minutes.  I spent those 40 minutes trying to wake up since it was 5:30AM (will this child ever sleep to 7AM??)

I got the Ready, Set, School l kit from Amazon when it was almost 50% off and it is worth the money.   There quite a few things included in the kit that we really need to work on like using kid scissors and tying shoes.

Do you have any holiday traditions linked to your heritage?

  2. Dia de los Reyes is celebrated on Jan 6 in honor of the 3 kings (3 wise men) who went to deliver gifts to baby Jesus.
